Q.     Dear Doc, I have Hashimoto's. I am confused about goitrogens. I have heard that femented cruciferous vegetables have a higher goitrogen concentration. I have also heard the opposite, which is true? Thanks, Jess

A.     Dear Jess, While there is biochemical truth to goitrogens and their iodine uptake blocking activity, there are much deeper foundational problems behind the all too common condition of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. There are far too many nutritious elements to the many foods labeled as ‘goitrogenic’ to avoid them.

Hashimotos thyroiditis is a condition in which the body has created cross reacting antibodies to the thyroid gland, most often inhibiting its function. We test for and detect these antibodies in various levels in nearly half of our patients. Suboptimal thyroid functioning is present in nearly half of our patients as well.

The key cause to these antibodies is toxicity resulting in the auto-immune activation, and nutritional and hormonal deficiency resulting in immune system weakness and confusion. With our primary treatment focusing on detoxification, and nutritional and hormonal restoration, we typically see the antibody levels decrease dramatically and thyroid function improve. We observe this with other very important auto-antibodies such as ANA as well, and reversal of these along with strengthening and restoration of the immune balance results in a dramatic reversal of these epidemically increasing conditions, including Lupus, polymyalgia rheumatica, and others.

Iodine uptake can and should be tested as well, but simple restoration of the key missing nutrients and hormones is easy, safe, and effective. Avoidance of otherwise nutritious and necessary foods is not.

Hope this helps. Wishing you good health and a great day, Dr. Pearson
